I am a third generation fiber artist and come from a long line of artistic creative women.
My maternal grandmother, Magdaline Bajda, designed her clothing and created them by sewing or knitting the pieces. Her "go to church" knitted ensembles consisted of skirts and jackets using several different stitches to showcase the yarns. She enjoyed the challenge of intricate patterns and incorporated them into accessories as well.
As a child, my Mother, Helen Bentkowski, was always knitting or crocheting something if she wasn't sewing. My childhood wardrobe was exclusively hand made: play clothes, dresses and even coats (I grew up in Buffalo NY so you know we needed coats!) were designed and made by my Mom. Growing up I did not know other children were not as fortunate as I - being able to chose the pattern, fabric, buttons, etc. and have my clothes custom designed.
By age 9, I was making my own clothes. That was the beginning! Over the years, I have sewed, knitted and crocheted items for my home, family and friends, many times modifying patterns or creating my own. My recent crowning glory was the gown for my daughter, Sara's wedding - purple satin elegance with a train! Of course, purple Swarovski crystal jewelry to match!
I began SFB Originals in 2005 with the support of my family. Since I always enjoyed crocheting, it was the logical choice. I was astonished to find the variety of yarns had increased exponentially over the years - such choices - just like being in a candy store! This humble beginning of crocheting accessories has grown into
crocheting jewelry with wire. These designs use a variety of metals, beads, and pearls.
Since then, I have been challenged with designing bridal headpieces and jewelry, using leather in bracelets, and even wire wrapping rings! I see each opportunity as another door the Good Lord is opening for me, although the phrase "God gives us no more than we can handle" is recalled some days more than others! I do see Him playing the most important role in my life and all I do is reflect His glory! And you are the lucky ones to share in His gifts to me!
